Due to the outrageous war crimes committed by the Soviet Union, countries around the world took serious action. The United States placed an embargo on shipments of goods, like food and weapons. There were also warnings of a boycott, led by the United States, of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. This intervention, along with other events of conflict in the area, helped make the Middle East and South Asia a dangerous region during the 1980's. Countries that were once part of the Soviet Union began arguing among one another about if the Soviet deployment in Afghanistan was legal or illegal.
